Parents: How to Use the PQ App

 Both the early stages of learning to read and the later stages of getting better at reading, become much easier for children once they start using the PQ Pop-Up App. There are only a few steps you need to help them learn before they can start using it on their own:

Did you notice how the letter “A” looked different when it sounded different? Those different ways the letters looked are “PQs”. PQs are ways of making letters look different so that they can tell you which of their sounds they are making. PQs are like “phonics clues” and “sound-out hints”. PQs help children learn how to recognize unfamiliar words. The PQ Pop-Up App uses PQs to help guide you into getting good at reading. You and your children will learn all you need to learn about PQs simply by using the PQ Pop-Up App (more on this in Step 2, below).


Two Ways: The PQ Pop-Up App has two ways of assisting learners: it can help them recognize words, and it can help them understand words. Learners get help for recognizing words by touching them (or clicking them). They get help for understanding words by touching them, and then touching the  Word Explore button in the Pop-Up.

Steps for using the PQ Pop-Up to recognize words:


Step 1:  Whenever learners are reading and hit a word that they don’t immediately recognize, they should click or touch it. Clicking on the word will cause the PQ App to pop-up and show them the word in a small blue box. If the word has a lot of letters, the word will appear broken into smaller and more easily readable parts. To see what I mean, click on the following word: segmented.


Step 2: Once the word pops up in the blue box, they should try to read it again. If they still don’t recognize the word, they should click it again (click inside the blue box). They should watch and listen carefully to how the letters are spoken and change their looks, and then try to read the word again. Watching and listening to these “PQs”, (changes in how letters look and sound), will guide their minds into learning how to figure out words. 


Step 3: If they still don’t recognize the word, they should click it again; watching, listening, and trying again to recognize it.  They should keep clicking the word and trying to read it until they recognize it. Some simpler words only have two clicks of PQs. More complex words can have four. They should keep clicking and trying until they recognize the word or run out of PQs. Once they have been given all the PQs for the word, the word will be sounded-out and then, finally, normally spoken for them.

Steps for using the PQs Pop-Up App’s WordExplore button to understand words.

Step 1: Whenever they recognize a word but don’t know what it means, they should click the word to open the PQ Pop-Up App (just like they would for a word they don’t recognize).

Step 2: Once the PQ Pop-Up App opens with the word in its box, they should click on the WordExplore  button to open the Reference Panel. Once the reference panel opens they can select from a number of types of references for helping them understand the word: 

Step 3: If English is their primary language, they should click on the Dictionary  or Synonym  button to see the words definitions. If English is not their primary language, they should click on the Translator  button to see translations in their language. Note: if the Translator is not set to their primary language, click on the Translator Menu  button to select it.

Important Note: Learners can click on any word in the  dictionary,  synonyms or  roots reference panel (for example “embarrassing” below), and the PQ Pop-Up will help them read (recognize and understand) the word. 

Using the above steps, first you, and then your child, should practice with some of the words included in the table below. Show them how to use the PQ App: “click, watch, listen, and try to read it again”. Once they know how to use it to work out unfamiliar words, then have them click on the WordExplore  button and use the reference panel to get help understanding the meanings of words. Keep practicing together until they know when to click on a word, and how to use the PQ Pop-Up App to help them recognize and understand any word they encounter.
